The Client

Renault Samsung Motors (RSM), is a South Korean car manufacturing plant located within Busan’s Sinho regional industrial site. It was first established as Samsung Motors, with technical assistance from Nissan. In 2000, it became a subsidiary of Renault and adopted its present name, while Samsung maintained part ownership. RSM covers 1,650,000 m² and is able to manufacture 300,000 cars per year.

Risks & Consequences

In 2013, Renault Samsung Motors completed the installation of solar panels in the parking lots, rooftops and adjoining property of its Busan facility to build a 20-MW solar plant - one of the biggest in the world. They provide energy to the RSM operations and nearby houses. These key assets are an essential component of RSM’s overall operations. Protecting the Electrical Panels contributing to an uninterrupted production process is critical. Fire inside these panels can potentially cause collateral damage and disruption to business operations.

The Task

Design, supply and install bespoke fire suppression systems to protect all solar panel related Electrical Panels and Substations. Strict RSM requirements called for a modular, low footprint, low maintenance total flooding automatic fire suppression technology. The system should be certified and designed according to the precise requirements of each individual space and local regulation. It also needed to be able to extinguish different classes of fire since the variety of materials within the enclosures can become fuel.
